Thomas Ritzer is the Senior Advisor for Climate and Peace, situated in the Executive Office. He leads efforts to integrate climate considerations across our conflict transformation and peacebuilding work, including dialogue and mediation initiatives at national and regional levels. Before joining the Berghof Foundation, Thomas worked in the Policy and Mediation Division of the UN Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, where he set up the team on climate, peace and security and co-led the interagency Climate Security Mechanism. Thomas previously worked on the protection of civilians in the UN Department of Peace Operations and served in the UN Mission in South Sudan. Prior to the United Nations, he also worked as an international election observer, at the Foreign Ministry of Austria, and as a Fellow at Columbia University.
Thomas holds Master’s degrees from Columbia University/SIPA and the Vienna University of Economics and Business. He co-edited “Failed States – Staatsaufbau als Konfliktprävention” (2013) and co-authored “Peacekeeping und die neue Interventionslogik“ (2013).

Thomas Ritzer ist Senior Advisor für Klima und Frieden im Executive Office. Er stärkt die Integration von Klimaüberlegungen in unserer Arbeit zu Konflikttransformation und Peacebuilding, beispielsweise in Dialog- und Vermittlungsinitiativen auf nationaler sowie regionaler Ebene. Vor seinem Engagement bei der Berghof Foundation war Thomas in der Policy and Mediation Division des UN Departements for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs tätig, wo er ein Team zum Thema Klima und Sicherheit aufbaute und den Climate Security Mechanismus mitgestaltete. Thomas war davor im UN Departement for Peace Operations zum Thema Schutz der Zivilbevölkerung aktiv und war mit der UN Friedensmission im Südsudan. Vor seiner Zeit bei den Vereinten Nationen arbeitete Thomas als internationaler Wahlbeobachter, als Fellow an der Columbia University, und am österreichischen Außenministerium.
Thomas hat einen Master der Columbia University/SIPA sowie einen Magister der Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien. Er ist Co-Herausgeber von "Failed States – Staatsaufbau als Konfliktprävention" (2013) und Co-Autor von "Peacekeeping und die neue Interventionslogik“ (2013).
