Integrating women from resistance and liberation movements into peace processes

Reflections on 25 years of the Women, Peace, and Security agenda

Join us to hear from women in and associated with resistance and liberation movements about their experiences.

Twenty-five years after the adoption of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security, significant progress has been made on women’s inclusion in peace processes. However, there still remains a gap: efforts to advance women's participation tend to focus solely on women from civil society organisations and those representing governmental bodies. Women in and associated with resistance and liberation movements (WRLMs) are still not integrated in peace negotiations and post-war transition processes. Although interest from academia and international mediators in working with WRLMs is growing, this work tends to emphasise their roles during wartime or after their demobilisation, while overlooking their role in peace negotiations. In addition, many countries’ National Action Plans on the Women, Peace, and Security agenda fail to include the perspectives, experiences, and knowledge of WRLMs. Our latest policy paper "At and around the table" sheds light on the diverse roles of WRLMs in peace processes.

During this event, women in and associated with RLMs will share their experiences taking part in formal and informal peace processes and the challenges they faced. They will also give recommendations on how to better integrate WRLMs in peace negotiations and post-war transition periods.

Join us for a compelling discussion to mark the 25 years of the Women, Peace, and Security agenda.
