Join our discussion to critically reflect on peace research and practice in the Sahel, and to explore local perspectives on mediation and navigating social change.
The Sahel remains one of the world’s most complex and contested landscapes of conflict and peacebuilding. Conventional stabilisation approaches have often overlooked the diversity of local voices, community knowledge, and indigenous peace architectures that shape resilience and mediation from within. As crises continue to unfold across Niger and the broader Sahel region, there is an urgent need to rethink how researchers, policymakers, and practitioners understand and engage with peace processes – shifting from externally driven templates towards approaches that are grounded in local realities.
In this session, we will discuss findings from our latest report “Cultural blind spots in conflict resolution in Niger and the Sahel". The report challenges dominant paradigms in peace research and practice and brings forward local perspectives that are too often marginalised in policy debates.
At the event, the report’s author, leading experts on the Sahel, and peace practitioners from the region will examine what it means to support peace processes that are rooted in local agency, cultural nuance, and community-based conflict management practices.
Join us to critically assess current stabilisation approaches, hear insights from Sahelian peacebuilders, and explore pathways towards more inclusive and context-sensitive peace practice in the region.
