Pathways to peace in Sudan
Fireside chat ahead of the Berlin Ministerial Conference on Sudan
A timely exchange on how to strengthen collective efforts to support peace in Sudan.
As Sudan enters its third year of devastating conflict, the country continues to face one of the world’s most severe humanitarian and political crises. Since April 2023, fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has led to widespread violence, mass displacement, and the near collapse of state institutions. Millions have been forced to flee their homes, while efforts towards a negotiated settlement continue under challenging circumstances.
On 15 April 2026, Germany will co-host a Ministerial Conference on Sudan in Berlin together with the African Union, the European Union, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The conference aims to reinvigorate international engagement, strengthen coordination among key actors, and draw renewed political attention to the urgent need for a ceasefire, humanitarian access, and a credible political process.
In the lead-up to the conference, we invite you to join an online fireside chat bringing together Kwesi Sansculotte-Greenidge, Senior Advisor in our Sub-Saharan Africa Unit and our Executive Director, Chris Coulter.
The discussion will explore the current regional and international peace efforts, and the prospects for peace: How has the conflict evolved over the past months, and what are the main drivers sustaining it? What can realistically be expected from the upcoming Ministerial Conference in Berlin? And how can international actors better support inclusive and locally grounded peace efforts?
