Event series: National Dialogues at crossroads
National Dialogues x Transitional Justice

Join our launch event to discuss the interlinkages between National Dialogues and Transitional Justice, their shared characteristics, and complementarities.
Over the last two decades, National Dialogues have been increasingly recognised as a comprehensive tool for preventing violent conflicts and reaching inclusive political settlements. Similarly, Transitional Justice has been widely accepted as an important if not necessary approach to deal with experiences of large-scale human rights violations, contribute to reconciliation, foster the rule of law, and prevent the recurrence of violence. However, questions remain about how to best integrate both processes. Additionally, as National Dialogues and Transitional Justice are increasingly implemented at the same time, policymakers and practitioners often face practical challenges related to institutional coordination, overlapping mandates, and sequencing of steps.
At the launch event of our paper on “National Dialogues x Transitional Justice”, we will explore the conceptual linkage between both processes and discuss to what extent they may benefit from closer integration throughout the design, implementation, and follow-up phases. We will also highlight lessons learned from countries that have implemented National Dialogues and Transitional Justice processes in parallel.
This paper is part of the series “National Dialogues at crossroads” that aims at addressing the gap on how to best integrate certain topics in the design of National Dialogues and how to meaningfully include specific societal groups. The series compiles lessons learned and recommendations on four cross-cutting issues: climate change, digitalisation, protest movements, and Transitional Justice.
