The Berghof Foundation is deeply alarmed by the resurgence of violence in the Nagorno-Karabakh region that broke out over the weekend.

The fighting between forces loyal to Armenia and Azerbaijan has already caused dozens of deaths, and marks a dangerous departure from the 1994 ceasefire that had de-escalated a conflict stretching back decades.

“We urge the Armenian and Azeri parties to immediately renew their ceasefire,” says Oliver Wolleh, Head of Europe at the Berghof Foundation. “This long-running dispute can only be resolved through dialogue, not violence.”

“Our work demonstrates that people are open to a peaceful resolution of this conflict,” notes Wolleh. “Renewed violence not only threatens countless lives but also compounds the mutual pain and suffering of the past three decades. A ceasefire is urgently needed.”

The OSCE Minsk Group chaired by France, Russia and the United States has guided high-level attempts to resolve the dispute in Nagorno-Karabakh.
