Dr. Juan Diaz-Prinz is a Senior Advisor in the Ethiopia Unit at the Berghof Foundation. He is a peacebuilding professional with over 25 years of experience in mediation, dialogue facilitation, and peace process support across Europe, Africa, and Latin America.

Before joining Berghof, he served as a Senior Mediation Adviser with the United Nations’ Standby Team and as Acting Director of the Inclusive Peace Processes and Reconciliation Team at the United States Institute of Peace (USIP). In these roles, he provided high-level advisory support in conflict contexts including Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Cameroon, Egypt, Iraq, Myanmar, Sudan, Tunisia, Ukraine, Venezuela, and the Western Balkans.

His work focuses on insider mediation, inclusive dialogue design, and strengthening civic space in restrictive environments. He has particular expertise in supporting women’s participation, integrating protest movements into peace processes, and building resilience through locally led dialogue.

Dr. Diaz-Prinz holds a PhD in International Relations from the University of Kent and advanced degrees in Gender and Diversity Competence and International Relations. He has taught at institutions including the Hertie School of Governance, Tampere University, University of Kent, and Willy Brandt School of Public Policy.
